This is a very simple afghan square which you can make with any kind of yarn that you have on hand. Note that if you use a thick yarn, the square will be a larger size, and when using a thin yarn it will be smaller.
Depending on what kind of yarn you use, you can use this pattern to make afghans, scarves, place mats and other things. And the great thing about afghan squares is that you can join them with fancy, or contrasting stitches for a unique design.
It is a great beginner crochet pattern, as the stitches are easy to make, and the pattern is easy to follow.
Material: Any worsted weight yarn
Hook size: Any hook suitable for yarn
Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring,
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in each ch around, join with sl st.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, (counts as first dc), dc in same first st, ch 1, *2 dc in next st, ch 1, repeat from * around, join with sl st.
Rnd 3: Sl st into next st and into ch-1 sp, ch 3, (counts as first dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-1 sp, *ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * all the way around ending at **, join with sl st.
Rnd 4: Sl st into next st and into ch-2 lp, ch 4, (counts as first tr) (tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in same ch-2 lp, *5 dc in next 2 ch-2 lps,** (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in next ch-2 lp, repeat from * all around ending at **, join with sl st.
