Broomstick Lace Wrap

Here it is, my free crochet pattern for a broomstick lace wrap. The pattern is fairly easy and straightforward. I used 3 balls of Patons Canadiana, The New Generation, but due to the nature of the pattern, you can use just about any yarn that you have on hand.

In broomstick lace you basically have 2 types of rows; a crochet row and a loop row. The crochet row is worked from right to left as normal, and the loop row is worked from left to right without turning the work. During the loop row, the loops are drawn up with the crochet hook and placed onto the knitting needle. During the crochet row, the loops are crocheted off the needle.

In this particular pattern the loops are worked in sets of 5. Each set of loops is worked as one loop.

Although broomstick lace is generally not turned, there are a few areas in the pattern where you will have to turn because a few extra crochet rows are added in.

When doing the edging it will begin to look sloppy at round 2, but it straightens out once you crochet the last round. The ends will look slightly ruffled, which you can eliminate with blocking.

Material: Patons Canadiana, The New Generation (3-4 100g/3.5oz. balls). I used 3 balls for this wrap and had just enough) If you don't have Patons, you can use any other medium weight yarn.
Hook Size: H/8-5.00MM
Circular Knitting Needle Size: 20MM
Finished Measurement: 60x16.

Ch 241, or any multiple of 5 plus 1,

Row 1 (crochet row): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Do not turn.

Row 2 (loop row): Slip the active lp onto knitting needle, *working in bl only, draw up a lp in next st and place onto knitting needle, repeat from * to end of row. Do not turn.

Row 3: Slip hook under the first set of 5 lps and remove from needle, yo and pull through, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) all into the first set of 5 lps, *insert hook into the next set of 5 lps and remove from needle, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) all into the set of 5 lps, repeat from * to end of row. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch-1), sk next st, sc into dc, *ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sc into dc, repeat from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, dc in last st. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch across. Do not turn.

Rows 2 to 5 form the pattern. Repeat another 6 times, or until you have reached a desired width minus 2 inches, making sure to end with row 3. Do not fasten off. Turn and continue with edging. The edging will make up the remaining 2 inches for the desired width.

Edging:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 4, sk next st, sc into next dc, (ch 4, sk next 4 sts, sc into next st), repeat to last 2 sts before the corner, ch 4, sk next st, (sc, ch 4, sc) into corner st, (ch 4, sc into side of next sc) repeat along the side and into next corner,* (ch 4, sc) once more into corner st, repeat from * to *, ch 4, join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Sl st into lp, ch 1, Turn, sc into same lp, *10 sc into next corner lp, (5 sc into next lp) repeat up to the corner lp, repeat from * around up to last lp where the first sc was worked, 4 sc into last lp. Join with sl st. Do not turn.

Rnd 3 (loop row): Slip the active lp onto knitting needle, *working in bl only, draw up a lp in next st and place onto knitting needle, repeat from * around. Do not turn.

Rnd 4: Slip hook under the first set of 5 lps and remove from needle, yo and pull through, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) all into the first set of 5 lps, *insert hook into the next set of 5 lps and remove from needle, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) all into the set of 5 lps, repeat from * around. Join with sl st and fasten off.

To Block:

Lay a damp towel on a flat surface and position the wrap. Lay another damp towel on top and allow to dry.
