This is a simple afghan square which you can make with just about any kind of yarn that you have on hand. Just keep in mind that when you use a thinner or thicker yarn that the finished size will also be different. The square shown is made with Paton's Canadiana yarn, and it measures approximately 7 inches squared.
The stitches are easy, and thus it is a great beginner crochet pattern.
Material: Patons Canadiana, (or any yarn desired)
Hook size: I/9-5.50 MM
Finished size: 7" square.
Beg V-Stitch: Ch 5, (counts as dc and ch 2,) dc in same lp or st as indicated.
V-stitch: (dc, ch 2, dc) all in same lp or st indicated.
Ch 4, join with sl st to form circle
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in each ch, join with sl st.
Rnd 2: Beg v-stitch in first st, v-stitch in next st and in each st around. Join with sl st in dc, (third ch of beg V-stitch.)
Rnd 3: Sl st into lp, Beg V-stitch, 7 tr in next v-stitch, *V-stitch in next v-stitch, 7 tr in next v-stitch, repeat from * around. Join with sl st in dc, (third ch of beg V-stitch.)
Rnd 4: Sl st into lp, beg v-stitch, *ch 2, sk next 3 tr, 7 tr in next tr, ch 2, sk next 3 tr,** v-stitch in next v-stitch, repeat from * around ending at **. Join with sl st in dc, (third ch of beg V-stitch.)
Rnd 5: Sl st into lp, ch 3, (counts as first dc), work another dc in same lp, *3 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 3 tr, 5 dc in next tr, dc in next 3 tr, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp**, 2 dc in v-stitch, repeat from * around.
