This is a free crochet pattern for a very simple 3-inch afghan square. The square begins to curl up a bit at the first round, and curls over even more once you do the back post double crochet stitches in the second round. As a result, it creates a nice raised circle in the center.
Material: Paton's Canadiana, The New Generation, or any medium weight yarn. You will need a small amount of 2-3 colors, depending on whether or not you want to make rnd 3 the same color as the first or not.
Hook Size: H/8-5.00MM
Crochet Abbreviations:
CA = Color A
CB = Color B
Bpdc = Back Post Double Crochet
Ch = Chain/Chains
Dc = Double Crochet
Sl St = Slip Stitch
Sp/Sps = Space/Spaces
St/Sts = Stitches
With CA, ch 4, join with Sl st to form circle.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work another 2 dc in same ch, 3 dc in next ch and in each ch around. Join with sl st. Fasten off. (12 sts)
Rnd 2: Join CB around the base of first dc, working at the back, ch 1, bpdc around same base, ch 1, *bpdc around base of next st, ch 1, repeat from * around. Join with sl st. Do Not Fasten Off. (12 sts and 12 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 3: Sl st into ch-1 sp, Join CA, ch 2 (does not count as st), work 7 dc in same ch-1 sp, *dc in next 2 ch-1 sps**, 7 dc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * around ending at **. Join with sl st. (36 sts) Fasten off.
